The restaurant on the first Arby was opened by Leroy and Forrest Raffel in Boardman, Ohio, July 23, 1964 selling roast beef sandwiches, fries and ice tea. The franchise opened the first Arby until a year later.

Arby was bought by Triarc company in 1993 and merged with Wendy Triarc in 1993 to Wendy Arbys Group. In 2011, a private equity group Roark Capital Group, the restaurant Arby bought and disconnected from the group of Wendy.

Arby was the first American fast-food chain to a light menu (calories) and also the first, and smoking in all restaurants of the company in 1994, must be prohibited.
